Go Slow to Go Fast

I don't know about you, it always seems I am rushing. Rushing to solve, do, start, finish, even enjoy.

What I am remembering is that in order to go fast, or be effective, productive, efficient, we actually have to slow down. I know this. Sometimes I forget.

I was reminded by it recently. Kind of funny how it came up.

Our sweet GSD Rocky, (pictured above) went to summer camp (aka obedience school) for 5 weeks. The day we picked up Rocky to bring him home was our first follow up session. Meaning, the trainer was showing us how to continue the obedience work at home.

While showing me the commands (sit, down, come, place), and instructing me on what to do, the trainer repeatedly said, "Stephanie, slow down".

After 45 minutes of hearing this, and then watching the recording of me -- I finally remembered the value of going slow.

First, Rocky is picking up on my energy. Second, he is very sensitive. The way we move -- for most animals -- is vital in them feeling settled, or not.

Over the last 3 weeks since Rocky has been home, I have practiced going even slower. I actually count to myself: 1,2,3, before I make my next move/command.

The result?
He and I are in sync. Rocky is doing even more amazing then he was before. Note: he is a rescue and didn't get the basics for the first 12 months of his sweet life.

This scenario of slowing down to go fast applies to all areas of life. I have used it when I am in transitions, waiting for clarity. If I rush the process I make mistakes and ignore my inner voice.

I have used it when dealing with challenges in relationships. By slowing down and allowing space, wisdom comes and healing often happens at deeper levels.

As with anything we want to gain mastery with, it's not a perfect. It takes consistent practice. Even as I am typing this I am trying to slow down!!!

What's your experience with slowing down?
